Answer Key/Teaching Notes Account Registration and Subscription

Access to answer keys and teaching notes requires an approved account and annual paid subscription fee (access to the cases is free). All new subscribers must first be vetted to make sure that they are teachers affiliated with an educational institution. New subscribers should follow the directions under no. 3 below.

1. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE BEEN APPROVED FOR A PASSWORD ACCOUNT

If you already have an approved account, you do not need to re-register. You do however need to pay for your subscription. To do this, go to http://www.nccsts.org/subscribe.php and, when prompted, log in with your username (not your email address) and password. The cost of an annual subscription is $25.00. Online credit card payments only are accepted; we do not accept purchase orders, checks, or cash.

2. ADMINISTRATORS PAYING FOR AN APPROVED TEACHER PASSWORD ACCOUNT

Go to http://www.nccsts.org/subscribe.php and log in with the teacher's username and password and follow the steps presented there. The cost of an annual subscription is $25.00. We only accept online credit card payments; we do not accept purchase orders, checks, or cash.

3. NEW APPLICANT REGISTRATION

New applicants should refer to the information below and follow the steps as indicated to first be approved for an account, after which you will be guided through the subscription / payment process.

Account Registration and Approval

Before you pay for your subscription, we need to determine that you are an instructor affiliated with an educational institution. We verify your information on your school website's faculty directory. As part of the registration process, you will be asked to provide a website address (URL) for a specific web page (not a general school home page) that will help us to determine your eligibility. The school website must show: your name, your teaching position, and your institutional email address. We verify every application by comparing it to the website information. Make sure your email address matches the one on the website. You will not be approved without this information.

If you cannot provide a URL for a school web page that lists your name and institutional email address, then list the URL of your school's general website and provide verification by one of the following two methods: (1) A note on school letterhead with your name, position, and faculty email, which you can either fax to us at 716-645-2975, Attn. Carolyn Wright, or mail to Carolyn Wright, Dept. of Biological Sciences,109 Cooke Hall, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14260; or (2) have your department head/principal (department secretary) send an email message to nccsts@buffalo.edu with your name, position, and faculty email address (Note: The person sending this email must provide the URL for a school website page showing their name, position, and school email address so that we can verify that they are a legitimate reference; if they cannot supply this, please follow option (1) above).

Please note:  We do not accept commercial email addresses from providers like Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, Verizon.net, Comcast.net, etc., but require youremail address at school, e.g., janedoe@ub.edu.

Rules and Restrictions

Upon your acceptance as a registered account holder, you enter into an agreement with us that affords you certain privileges while conferring upon you certain responsibilities:

  • Copyright for the case study materials on our website is held by the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science. These materials must be used in conformance with our usage guidelines.
  • Reproduction, reposting, or sharing of answer keys and teaching notes is strictly forbidden.
  • Each registration/subscription is for a single user only; we do not permit sharing of passwords.
  • We reserve the right to confirm the identity of anyone attempting to register for an account as well as to log and review activities on our site and other sites using/misusing our materials.
  • If we reasonably believe that activities which compromise the confidentiality of our answer keys and teaching notes have occurred, we reserve the right to cancel your subscription without refund or notice and to block access to all users from that IP address.

Using Modules and Case Studies Resources

How To Use a Module

IRIS STAR Legacy Modules are Web-based instructional materials that provide information about working with students with disabilities. Each interactive Module is made up of five components:

  • Challenge: A realistic scenario relevant to education professionals
  • Initial Thoughts: Questions that allow students to explore and consider what they currently know about the scenario presented in the Challenge
  • Perspectives & Resources: Nuggets of information (e.g., text, movies, audio interviews, activities) that allow students to actively engage in learning the module’s main content
  • Wrap Up: A summary of the information presented in the previous components
  • Assessment: An evaluation tool that offers students the opportunity to apply what they know and to evaluate what topics they need to study further

How do I navigate a STAR Legacy Module?

To begin, click on the Challenge at the top of the STAR Legacy cycle. Movement throughout the sections of the Module can be managed by making use of the navigation bar at the right side of the page or by following the links at the top or bottom of each page. The IRIS Center recommends that visitors to the Website work through the pages of each Module in the order presented in the STAR Legacy cycle, starting with the Challenge and moving to Initial ThoughtsPerspectives & ResourcesWrap Up, and Assessment. The Center feels that visitors who skip one or more of these sections may not receive the full informational benefit of the cycle. Please note that many Module sections contain multiple pages, hyperlinks, short movies, and sound files.

How To Use a Case Study

IRIS Case Study Units provide students with applications to strengthen their understanding of select topics as well as a way to enhance their problem-solving abilities. Designed to accommodate a wide range of student skills, Case Study sets are divided into three progressive levels:

Level A – Gathering information
Level B – Analyzing information
Level C – Synthesizing information

Case Studies have several elements:

  • Background – This contains information about the students in each Case Study.
  • Scenario – A Scenario is a description of a hypothetical situation that requires a teacher’s response. In Levels A and B, goals for the target child are provided. At Level C, however, no goals are provided, and identifying goals becomes part of the assignment. In addition, at Level C, areas of strength for the target child are provided to assist in the development of goals.
  • Possible Strategies – Multiple strategies are suggested as responses to each scenario.
  • STAR Sheets – Each strategy is accompanied by a STrategy And Resource (STAR) Sheet. These contain a description of the strategy, relevant research findings, an explanation of how the strategy is implemented, and references. It is through STAR Sheets that students locate the information they need to answer the assignment questions.
  • Assignment – An assignment accompanies each Case Study and is appropriate for the Case Study level. At Level A, assignments allow students to show that they understand the possible strategies for that case. At Level B, students additionally are asked to analyze the information presented in the STAR Sheets. At the most complex level, Level C, students are also required to compare and defend their application of specific strategies.
  • Instructor’s Guide – An answer key for instructors to use in the assessment of student assignments is available on request.
